Maryville Intermediate School's Learning Garden
On October 4, Kathleen Hammontree wrote, “Here are some pictures of my students in our special habitat, the MIS Learning Garden, doing a scavenger hunt to help them become acquainted with the location of plants and other features in it.”

"The Maryville Intermediate School Learning Garden is composed of 4 separate areas. The enclosed area contains a pond with plant and animal life, native plants, conifers, lizard lair, a traditional African-American bottle tree as well as other perennials. The second area is an herb garden that also contains annuals and perennials to attract butterflies. The third area is a meadow containing native grasses and plants. This area is left untouched most of the year. The fourth area is a transition zone between the garden and the playground area. It is primarily lawn interspersed with deciduous trees."
"We have registered our garden on the special habitats website. We have also been tracking the migration of the monarchs as well as posting our sightings with Journey North and we have our paper butterflies ready to send off as part of the symbolic migration."
