What the Numbers Mean:
These data are from the National Weather Service Office in Memphis. The data are updated twice a day on the RTPTN webpage.
The numbers in the columns labeled "High" contain the highest temperature recorded at that location between 7AM on that date and 7AM the next morning. (This is referred to as the "24 hr high" on the NWS webpage.)
The columns labeled "Overnight Low" contain the lowest temperature recorded between 7PM on that date and 7AM the next morning. (This is referred to as the "12 hr low " on the NWS webpage.)
Times refer to local standard time. The first five cities in the list are in the Central Time Zone. The last four are in the Eastern Time Zone.
How-to Hints for Making a Line Graph:
Put the days of the month along the bottom of the graph, but skip a line between each day so you can record the overnight lows. (October has 31 days.)
Put the temperatures on the left side, starting with zero and going up to 100 in tens (like the bar graphs).
Pick the city and plot the first two points.
After you plot the first two points, connect them with a straight line.
As you add each new point, connect it to the last point with a straight line.
Junior Naturalist Challenges:
Can you suggest a reason for why Crossville usually isn't as hot as the other places? (Anybody from Crossville who wants to explain this to the rest of us???)
Can you suggest a reason for why Bristol's overnight low is usually lower that that in the other places? (Anybody from Bristol who wants to explain this to the rest of us???)
10/7: Nashville went from a high of 82 on Wednesday to a high of only 58 on Thursday. Wow! Can you explain how this happened?
